Las Vegas, NV (April 26, 2022) – A delivery driver suspected of driving under the influence struck a child on a bicycle on Saturday afternoon, April 23, per reports from the Las Vegas Metro Police Department.
Police said the driver, a woman since identified as Ashley Davis, was delivering food in a residential neighborhood near Cactus Avenue when she hit a child on a bike. The child’s age was not released, but medics took them to UMC with moderate injuries, where they remain hospitalized.
The incident allegedly marked Davis’s third DUI offense in recent years, police added. Davis was arrested on charges of DUI, operating a vehicle with an expired registration, and driving with a suspended license. Judge Amy Ferreira released Davis on her own recognizance this week and ordered her to undergo drug monitoring before her next court appearance in May.
Officers named two popular food delivery services in their report of the accident, though neither provider said they had a record of Davis working for them. The investigation into the accident remains ongoing, and further details have not been provided at this time.
Our thoughts are with the injured child and their family in hopes of a full recovery.
Auto-Pedestrian Accidents in Nevada
When it comes to traffic accidents in the Silver State, authorities say that driving under the influence and failure to yield the right-of-way are two of the leading causes of these incidents. Moreover, these two causes, along with distracted driving and speeding, are the top contributors to auto-pedestrian wrecks in Nevada.
Even worse, per Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports, pedestrian fatalities account for nearly 20% of all vehicle accident deaths. Although deaths were lower in 2019 overall, they have increased more than 50% since reaching their lowest point, recorded in 2009.
Unfortunately, the pedestrian fatality rate in and around the greater Las Vegas area, including Reno, has risen steadily in the last decade.
Significant financial difficulties, long-term physical issues and disability, and severe emotional scarring are just a few of the victims’ devastating circumstances. When victims die due to these incidents, their loved ones may be left in an unbelievably tough position. Families must often cope with exorbitant medical and funerary expenses on top of grieving their loved ones.
Thankfully, if you’ve sustained injuries or lost someone you love in an auto-pedestrian accident, you may have legal options moving forward.
