Las Vegas, NV (February 21, 2022) – Three people suffered injuries, two of whom are in critical condition, in a crash that happened Sunday evening, February 20.
The crash was reportedly caused by a driver under the influence of alcohol, according to officers with the Las Vegas Metro Police Department, and occurred around 6:30 p.m. at eastbound Sahara Avenue and Maroney Avenue, just east of Maryland Parkway.
Per reports from the LVMPD, the alleged at-fault driver was in a Scion TC, headed westbound on Sahara at a high rate of speed, when she crashed into a Dodge Dart traveling eastbound and making a left turn. The 25-year-old male driver of the Dart was critically hurt, as was his 39-year-old female passenger. All three were taken to Sunrise Hospital by ambulance, where they remain.
Metro police said they determined the Scion’s driver, identified as 30-year-old Cassandra Valerie Leal, was impaired. She was booked in absentia for two counts of DUI resulting in substantial harm and two counts of reckless driving involving death or personal injury.
The crash remains under investigation at this time, and more information is slated to be released in the coming days.
Our thoughts are with the injured victims in hopes of their full recovery.
Auto Accidents Caused By DUI in Nevada
In 2017, officials say that 100% of deadly wrong-way accidents that happened across the Silver State involved driver impairment. Unfortunately, last year ended with almost 400 lives lost on Nevada’s roadways due to DUI, a 14-year high.
And in May of this year alone, crashes were up more than 90% and fatal accidents were up nearly 115%. During the past year, deadly auto accidents throughout Nevada have more than doubled when compared to the same time period in 2020. There were almost 30 crashes during this time, with more than 30 fatalities reported statewide.
Furthermore, since the beginning of 2021, more than 100 crashes have happened in Clark County, resulting in more than 100 fatalities. This marks a year-to-date increase of more than 40%.
It’s clear that fatal auto accidents are all too common in the state of Nevada. When victims die as a result of these incidents, their loved ones may be left in an unbelievably tough position. Families must often endure exorbitant medical and funerary expenses.
But if you’ve been affected by one of these crashes, you may have legal options. If you’ve sustained injuries or lost a loved one as a result of another party’s negligent actions, please contact a Las Vegas auto accident lawyer at your earliest convenience.
