Las Vegas, NV (July 20, 2022) – Tuesday’s tragic five-vehicle collision in northwest Las Vegas resulted in the arrest of an 18-year-old driver on suspicion of reckless driving and DUI, according to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.

On Tuesday afternoon, police say the motorist, later identified as Jerry Madera, was going westbound on Washington Avenue at a high rate of speed. According to the accident report, Madera’s 2007 Toyota Rav 4 failed to stop for the constant red traffic light at the junction of Torrey Pines Drive.

Officials noted that the driver of a 2016 Mazda CX-5 was turning left onto Washington from Torrey Pines at the same time. At a red light, the front of the Toyota collided with the left side of the Mazda, followed by the left side of a stopped 2008 Smart Fortwo. Madera and the Mazda’s driver, a 33-year-old woman, were transported to the University Medical Center’s trauma center for treatment of their injuries. A driver of a 2017 Toyota Rav 4, who was also involved in the crash, suffered minor injuries.

The driver of the Mazda succumbed to her injuries and was confirmed dead by medical workers at UMC Trauma, according to the police. Madera was placed in the Clark County Detention Center for relevant reckless driving and DUI-related crimes after he was released from the hospital. No other injuries were recorded, but the inquiry continues.
