Dayton, NV – Deadly Wrong-Way Crash on US 50 at River Boat Rd Under Investigation

Dayton, NV (May 7, 2022) – A wrong-way, head-on crash took place on U.S. Highway 50 near Dayton on Saturday afternoon, May 7, and left one person dead, according to reports released by Nevada State Police.

Initial indications are that a Volkswagen sedan and a Ford Explorer were involved in a head-on collision in the westbound lanes of Highway 50 near River Boat Road around 2:25 p.m. One male driver died at the scene, while the other driver was rushed to a local hospital for further treatment. That person’s condition was not immediately available, and officers did not say which driver was the suspected wrong-way motorist.

Westbound traffic was diverted onto Occidental Drive for around two hours while police worked the scene. Their investigation into the circumstances of the wreck is ongoing, however.

We would like to extend our thoughts and deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim, and we hope for a full recovery for the injured victim.

Nevada Wrong-Way Accident Fatalities

Dayton, NV - Deadly Wrong-Way Crash on US 50 at River Boat Rd Under InvestigationIn 2017, officials noted that 100% of wrong-way accidents ending in death across the Silver State involved some type of driver distraction or driver impairment.

Authorities say that, between 2014 and 2018, there were more than 130 wrong-way crashes in Nevada that resulted in about 20 fatalities. However, the Nevada Department of Transportation is testing wrong-way driver detection systems, one of a handful of states looking into new technology to prevent these deadly collisions.

Thanks to these systems, officials say that wrong-way drivers were alerted and able to turn around almost 90% of the time before they got on the freeway. Nevertheless, these fatal wrong-way collisions remain relatively commonplace in the state of Nevada, particularly in and around the Las Vegas area. When victims succumb to their injuries as a consequence of a wrong-way crash, their families may find themselves in an extremely difficult situation. Medical and funeral costs pile up, becoming overwhelming for bereaved families.
