Vehicle-Related Deaths and Injuries in the Greater Las Vegas Area

Las Vegas, NV - Injuries Reported in Auto Collision on US 95 at Decatur BlvdAbout 37,260 Americans lost their lives in car accidents in 2008. However, there were 43,500 deaths related to motor accidents in 2005. Consequently, it was encouraging to see that deadly car accidents were becoming less common. In Nevada, there has also been a sharp decline in deadly car accidents. Additionally, 240 car accidents in Las Vegas resulted in fatalities in 2009, down from 430 in 2005.

However, these tragic instances seem to be on the rise once again, primarily as a result of our culture of the always-on, where driving drunk at night in Las Vegas appears to be the norm. Between 2005 and 2008, 100 to 110 fatalities per year in Las Vegas were caused by drivers who had blood alcohol levels above 0.8 percent (the greatest number was 145 in 2006, and the lowest was 105 in 2008). In 2009, there were around 70 deaths, a significant decrease from 2008.
