North Las Vegas, NV (January 30, 2022) – Nine people died and six others suffered serious injuries when a driver ran a red light and plowed into multiple vehicles in North Las Vegas on Saturday evening, January 29.
Minors were among those killed in the crash, which happened around 3:00 p.m., said Alexander Cuevas, a North Las Vegas Police Department spokesperson. He said the suspected at-fault driver, who was in a Dodge Challenger, was also killed.
A total of six vehicles were involved, per officers on the scene. Authorities say the Challenger’s driver initially hit two vehicles in the oncoming eastbound lanes of Cheyenne Avenue, then hit three vehicles in a westbound lane. One of the first vehicles struck was a Toyota Sienna minivan with three adults and four children traveling inside, all of whom perished in the accident.
Two people in another vehicle were taken to the University Medical Center hospital via ambulance and one of those victims died there. Six other victims who were injured suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
The investigation is ongoing, though speed is suspected as the main cause of the collision. The Clark County Coroner’s Office is slated to release the identities of the victims, as well as their causes and manners of death, later this week.
We would like to extend our deepest condolences to the families of the deceased victims. Our thoughts are with the injured victims in hopes of their full recovery.
Deadly Vehicle Accidents in Nevada
Department of Public Safety officials released their monthly and year-to-date statistics on crashes for every county in Nevada. In May alone, crashes were up more than 90% and fatal accidents were up nearly 115%.
Adding insult to injury, during the past year, deadly auto accidents throughout the Silver State have more than doubled when compared to the same time period in 2020. Sadly, there were almost 30 crashes during this time, with more than 30 fatalities reported statewide.
Furthermore, since the beginning of 2021, more than 100 crashes have happened in Clark County, resulting in over 100 fatalities. This marks a year-to-date increase of more than 40%. It’s clear that serious auto accidents are all too common in the state of Nevada. Those affected by these accidents often cope with financial difficulties, long-term physical issues, and emotional trauma.
In the event that victims die as a result of a negligent driver’s actions, their loved ones may be left in an unbelievably tough position. Families must often endure exorbitant medical and funerary expenses.
